For years, scientists believed that Neanderthals disappeared without a trace 30,000 years ago. This changed after geneticists succeeded in extracting ancient DNA from Neanderthal bones. Some of the reconstructed DNA sequences were found in the genome of modern humans. There is only one explanation for this: Not only did modern humans have sex with Neanderthals, but the two species also had children 👨👨👧👦. On average, 2% of our DNA comes from Homo neanderthalensis. However, this only applies to non-African humans, as the first encounter between modern humans and Neanderthals did not occur until 100,000 years ago, after our ancestors had left Africa.
